In early March 2013 over 16,000 dead pigs were found in the Shanghai Songjiang section of the Huangpu River, which supplies the city of Shanghai, China with some of its drinking water. The pigs were dumped by farmers in neighbouring Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, a major pig farming area that is upstream of Shanghai.〔http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/12/world/asia/thousands-of-dead-pigs-found-in-chinese-river.html〕 A 19 March report on Xinhua News Agency claimed that intensive farming was the cause.〔Xinhuanet (密集饲养的困境- 黄浦江死猪事件追踪 ) 19 March 2019〕 The BBC reported with no proof that some pig corpses were infected by porcine circovirus. ==References==
